Best Actress: Glenda Jackson II
Do you want to know how much I hate A Touch of Class?
So much so that when I was planning out this rewatch project that it was at least top 2 of films I definitely did not want to rewatch again, and knew I'd have to force myself into. (Honestly, I talk a lot of shit about Women in Love as well but I also really f*cking hate The Good Earth.)
Briefly, cause let's wrap this shit up: Glenda and George Segal play two hale and hearty people living in London. There's attraction. She's recently divorced and a single mother, he's unhappily married. They decide to have an affair. (Is it that easy? There's usually always an element of tortured We shouldn't when affairs are portrayed on film) For some dumb reason, Glenda's character will only agree to have sex with George's character if it's in a sunny location, so they go to Spain.
Hijinks! Pratfalls! They discover they actually f*cking hate each other. No, wait, they truly love each other.
In the end, nobody's happy. Especially not me, who wasted 106 minutes on this. Even the title song is dumb.
Glenda was nominated against Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist), Marsha Mason (Cinderella Liberty), Barbra Streisand (The Way We Were), and Joanne Woodward (Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams). Honestly. How?! How did Glenda win over any of these women?
Okay, I haven't seen Cinderella Liberty, but I have to assume Marsha Mason was great in it. But like, Ellen Burstyn and Barbra Streisand both gave career-defining performances in The Exorcist and The Way We Were. You're telling me an unfunny rom-com won over a horror flick and a decades-spanning love story? And don't get me started on Joanne Woodward. She doesn't get half the credit she was due when she was acting back then. She's great in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams. Literally would've voted for anyone else over Glenda.
If you feel very strongly about A Touch of Class, let me know why in the comments. I can't imagine I'll ever change my mind on this film, but I'd at least hear you ou!
DID I LIKE A TOUCH OF CLASS? This is how I know I'll never redo this project. Cause I will never willingly subject myself to this film ever again. I'll skip it if I feel like revisiting the Best Actress winners decades from now.
