A Month of Sophia Loren

It's always a delight to watch Sophia Loren on screen, she's such a magnetic performer.

Unfortunately, I'd already seen many of the films slated for her Star of the Month turn, but there were enough 'obscure' films for me to make an effort!

The Priest's Wife (La moglie del prete) (1970)

I mean, half the treat this month was that I got to watch a few Marcello Mastroianni films as well. I love him, I love Sophia, I love their films together that I've seen (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and Marriage Italian Style are hands down two of my favourite films of all time).

So it was so wonderful to add The Priest's Wife to the list of my favourite collaborations. It's zany enough to be hilarious and preposterous but it's also never truly treated like camp by either Sophia or Marcello.

A Special Day (Una Giornata Particolare) (1977)

It really feels like we're watching something we shouldn't be looking at with this film, taking place on the day Hitler visited Mussolini in Rome. The relationship between Sophia's overwhelmed housewife and Marcello's gay anti-fascist radio announcer is heartfelt, tender, devastating, and made all the more sad because you know there's no happy ending in sight.

Legend of the Lost (1957)

There were a lot of stunningly framed landscapes, but if my options are either die of thirst in the desert or survive and be yoked to John Wayne forever, I know what I'd choose.

Operation Crossbow (1965)

I appreciate Sophia Loren so much but man is it hard to take George Peppard seriously.
