Best Actress: Jessica Tandy
Driving Miss Daisy is such a goofy movie when you stop and think about it.
Like, I'm sorry, but it sounds like the kind of movie that Tina Fey would dream up as playing in the background of a 30 Rock episode.
Imagine this coming out today. And it won Best Picture?! Against Born on the Fourth of July, Dead Poets Society, Field of Dreams, and My Left Foot? I beg your unbelievable pardon?! And Do the Right Thing wasn't even nominated? Christ on a cracker, what were they doing in 1989?
Jessica Tandy winning the Oscar for playing the elderly, stubborn, ornery, titular Miss Daisy, sure. It is a great performance, I'm sure it was long overdue, but how did this win Best Picture?
In the briefest of brevity: Jessica Tandy plays Miss Daisy. Morgan Freeman plays Hoke, her driver. Over the course of 25ish years, between 1948 and 1972, we follow the story of these two unlikely besties develop a deep friendship. It's very cheesy and hokey in the way '80s feel-good films are. The score is fun. Morgan Freeman's great. Jessica Tandy's great. I had to laugh out loud seeing Patti Lupone in this. Who knew!
What a world.
Jessica Tandy was nominated against Isabelle Adjani (Camille Claudel), Pauline Collins (Shirley Valentine), Jessica Lange (Music Box) and Michelle Pfeiffer (The Fabulous Baker Boys). I hate that movie but I think I'd give my vote to Michelle Pfeiffer; she's the best part of it.
DID I LIKE DRIVING MISS DAISY? Good gravy. No.
