Should I Watch TWO FOR THE ROAD or THE PICASSO SUMMER?
It's time for another round of 'Should I Watch?' this time with one of my favourite movies of all time, Two for the Road, and a new-to-me watch in July that I honestly can't stop thinking about.
First things first: what's the plot line?
Two for the Road: "A married couple's relationship rises and falls during a series of European trips."
The Picasso Summer: "A San Francisco couple travels to France in search of Pablo Picasso."
Does Albert Finney play a disillusioned architect?
Two for the Road: Yes.
The Picasso Summer: Yes.
Is the female lead European/or seems European and impossibly chic?
Two for the Road: Yes, Audrey Hepburn.
The Picasso Summer: Yes, Yvette Mimieux. She was born in California but spoke with such a charming accent.
Does the couple laze on a beach in southern France?
Two for the Road: All the time, until they become unhappy.
The Picasso Summer: Once or twice before their vacation ends.
Is the female lead wearing a red bathing suit while doing so?
Two for the Road: Yes, a one piece.
The Picasso Summer: Yes, a two piece.
Which film has the better score?
Henry Mancini scored Two for the Road, and you can't beat Mancini in my opinion.
Is there some kind of New Wave-style element in this movie?
Two for the Road: The story is told non-linearly and in vignette form.
The Picasso Summer: There are major animation sequences that are just... beyond.
Will you understand the story the first time you watch it?
Two for the Road: If you're paying attention to the costuming, yes.
The Picasso Summer: Yes, but you might be thrown off by all the weird montages.
Is the couple still in love by the end of the movie?
Two for the Road: Yes, but at what cost?
The Picasso Summer: Yes, but they somehow miss the big reveal at the end, so you have to think they're going back to blissful ignorance.
Was this movie filmed on location?
Two for the Road: Yes, throughout the south of France.
The Picasso Summer: Yes, partially in Nice.
