What I Watched in July

An overview of what I watched in July.*

The Minotaur (1960)

I'm always here for an Amphitrite cameo! My girl doesn't get enough recognition in popular media.

Notorious (1946)

I know, I know! It's criminal that I haven't seen this yet. It was riveting. Taut storyline, sexy leads with perfect chemistry, a great comeuppance, and Claude Rains!

3 Women (1977)

This felt like a dream; disjointed and eerie and you can't quite put your finger on what's unsettling about it. You just know that something's happening while you're looking elsewhere. The performances in this film are outstanding; Shelley Duvall, how did you not win an Oscar for this?! And Sissy Spacek? You terrify me.

Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro) (1959)

This has been on my watch list forever and the number of times I've recorded this only to delete it when I wasn't in the mood after all. Who knows why a random Thursday late afternoon in the middle of a heatwave in July was the time for this, but I'm glad I finally watched this because it's gorgeous. This might be one of the most gorgeous films I've ever seen.

Electra (1962)

Absolutely captivating, though it felt like it was 16 hours long by the end of it.

Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)

The genre of Western where the gruff, doesn't-really-talk male lead wanders around the landscape with some variation of "Listen ma'am, if you're gonna tag along, you have to follow my rules" and "This is why I don't [insert totally normal, social behaviour]" only to have an about-face in the end will never quit, eh?
