Best Actress: Glenda Jackson I

So I think I actively hate this movie.

It's so pretentious. When I was hemming and hawing over doing this challenge around this time last year, I'm not going to lie, the thought flitted through my head that "You're going to have to watch Women in Love andsomeothermovies all over again, that's a downside."

I'm sure Glenda Jackson was a lovely woman and a phenomenal actress; it's just that both of her Oscar-winning films are two of my least favourite and I have never gone out of my way to source more of her work. Have I even seen anything else she's in? Hold that thought... I have not, unless I'm repressing something.

The male characters in Women in Love are so terrible and so uninteresting. We spend too much time with Oliver Reed and Alan Bates and far too little time with Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden. Hell, I'd even watch Eleanor Bron dance around a grand hall for more time than we got if it meant we didn't have to watch these bozos wrestle, ruminate and be cads.

I did enjoy Glenda's interpretive dance through the forest that summoned some Highland coos. That was interesting. I also loved Eleanor Bron's eye makeup in the party scene. I also want to lay in one of those expansive British fields and let an afternoon pass by. There, that's three things. I can end this post in good faith.

And just to further clear my conscience, here's an article from the Criterion Collection about Women in Love, written by Linda Ruth Williams. It doesn't change my mind, but it was beautiful to read.

Glenda was nominated against Jane Alexander (The Great White Hope), Ali MacGraw (Love Story), Sarah Miles (Ryan's Daughter), and Carrie Snodgress (Diary of a Mad Housewife).

Meh to all of them.

DID I LIKE WOMEN IN LOVE? No.
