Best Actress: Jane Fonda I

 Hello Ms Fonda!

I know they're not my normal vibe, but I do quite enjoy a gritty '70s drama. There's something about how groundbreaking they feel after decades of Production Code adherence and forced happily ever afters and villains getting theirs in the end.

In Klute, Jane plays a call girl who wants to be a model and actress embroiled in a stalker situation who becomes romantically involved with the detective (the titular Klute, played by Donald Sutherland) on the case. If you read the description, you'd think this might be a more violent film than it is. It's actual a rich character study of Bree, Jane's character, and how she relates to the world around her. Her whims and fears and how she wants to love Klute but just can't.

If you've hung around this blog any, you might know that I'm not a particular fan of Henry Fonda. I think he plays the same aw shucks character throughout the '40s. But I am a fan of Jane. Whether she's in a comedy, a drama, or whatever the hell Barbarella is, I can't keep my eyes off of her. She's such a smart actress. It's interesting to watch her humanize Bree, but not make her the stereotypical 'hooker with a heart of gold.'

Jane was nominated against Julie Christie (McCabe & Mrs. Miller), Glenda Jackson (Sunday Bloody Sunday), Vanessa Redgrave (Mary, Queen of Scots), and Janet Suzman (Nicholas and Alexandra). I've only seen Nicholas and Alexandra out of this bunch, but I can't argue with Jane getting her flowers!

DID I LIKE KLUTE? Yes!
