Best Actress: Diane Keaton
I hate this movie.
I hate its director. I hate its screenwriter. Well, co-screenwriter, I guess, I don't know anything about Marshall Brickman. I hate its male lead. I hate that he was a revered enough writer/director that actors were still clamouring for roles in his films up until what, five years ago? I'm sure there are a fair handful that would still want to be in one of his films today, which is disappointing.
All this to say that I've never liked Annie Hall, I'll never like Annie Hall, and if I suddenly profess a love of Annie Hall, I have a brain tumour. Call the doctor. And while I'm at it: I've never liked this writer/director. I've seen a few of his films over the years and they're all insufferably written and acted. This is probably why I'll never be a true film bro or cinephile. And I'm sure I'm being hypocritical and overlooking other male directors/writers for their awful behaviour offscreen, but like... come. on.
Expect this same level of vitriol when I get to Blue Jasmine. Cate Blanchett, why?!
Okay, let's focus on Diane Keaton. She was a great actress. She was a fashion icon. She was a tremendously talented writer. I read Then Again, her memoir, and was blown away at how beautifully she wrote about her life. I mourned when her family announced her death. What a loss, what a terrible, terrible loss.
This movie is still awful though.
Diane was nominated against Anne Bancroft (The Turning Point), Jane Fonda (Julia), Shirley MacLaine (The Turning Point), and Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl). What a list! I'm quite fond of The Turning Point, Anne was magnificent and Shirley was already well overdue for an Oscar by 1977. Did Jane give a bad performance ever? No. And Marsha Mason was great in The Goodbye Girl.
I'm sure Diane deserved the Oscar, she definitely did for later performances, nominated or not. But my god, I so thoroughly despise this film and its director/writer.
DID I LIKE ANNIE HALL? NO. I WILL NEVER LIKE THIS FILM AND I WILL NEVER WATCH IT AGAIN.
