What I Watched in January

An overview of what I watched in January. (Read my thoughts about the new-to-me films from Jean Arthur's turn as TCM's Star of the Month here.)

Elena and Her Men (Elena et les hommes) (1956)

Was there anything Ingrid Bergman couldn't do? She's so talented and charismatic. This was a gorgeous film, if a little dry towards the end, but Ingrid's the reason I didn't lose interest.

Also couldn't help but laugh, because I watched the French version not the English dub, that Mel Ferrer got dubbed and it was very obvious that he'd been dubbed. For as controlling as he was off-screen to Audrey Hepburn, it made me smile. It's what he deserved.

Phffft! (1954)

I loved how unconventional the storytelling was in this, and listen, anytime I get to watch either Judy Holliday or Jack Lemmon in a film, but especially together, is going to be a great time. I loved this!

The Affairs of Martha (1942)

This was a very charming, if illogical, romp!

Lady Luck (1946)

I'll never forgive Hollywood for not making Robert Young a bigger name. Why am I the only one in my offline life who knows this man?

The Earrings of Madame de… (Madame de…) (1953)

Guess I'll never get my heart broken, because I don't have my ears pierced. I loved how this story was framed, and Danielle Darrieux broke my heart in this. Très sympatique. I see why it made the Criterion Collection and why it's so lauded!
