Checking In: Did I Complete My 2024 New Year's Resolutions?

Let's see how I made out with my 2024 Classic Movie New Year's Resolutions, eh?

My 2024 Classic Movie New Year's Resolutions, A Check In:

1. Watch more Catherine Deneuve movies

Check! Thank God I didn't give myself a number, this allowed me to watch at my own rate. And boy, do I love Catherine Deneuve!

This year I watched from every decade of her career, and got to watch gems like Male Companion (Un monsieur de compagnie), Chateau Life (La vie de château), Belle de Jour, Manon 70, Mississippi Mermaid (La sirène du Mississipi), Donkey Skin (Peau d'âne), A Slightly Pregnant Man (L'événement le plus important depuis que l'homme a marché sur la Lune), The Woman in Red Boots (La femme aux bottes rouges), Le Sauvage, The Last Metro (Le dernier métro), and Indochine.

Some of these films went on to be my favourite movies of 2024 and have definitely earned spots in my overall favourite movies.

2. Watch Undercover Maisie (1947)

Boy, did I!

I will say that I think the longer the franchise went on, the more diminished the returns (ie., my favourite Maisie movie is still the first one) but Maisie always manages to make it fun. And Ann Sothern never phoned it in.

3. Watch all of Jane Powell's movies

Completed! You can read all of my thoughts on Jane Powell's movies here.

4. Finish Jean Harlow's filmography

Yes!

I didn't do a separate post breaking down my thoughts on all of them, but I did enjoy Dinner at Eight, Wife vs. Secretary, Libeled Lady and Personal Property. I will say that she was very magnetic and what a loss to the movie industry when she died in 1937.

5. Cook more Old Hollywood recipes

I made this resolution and then like, got obsessed with soups and pastas and just never got around to making anything. So, this is a fail.

6. Watch a classic movie for every year between 1920-2000

Once again, had no problem filling out the '20s, '30s, '40s, '50s, and '60s, but when it came to the 1970s-2000 that's where the trouble began. First I had to find Old Hollywood stars who were still making movies into the '90s (that weren't ALL Paul Newman or Robert Mitchum) and I think there's a reason so few of them continued to act? I mean, aside from majority of them dying that decade... theyjustweren'tgoodmovies.

So while I did watch some later movies with old Hollywood stars, I didn't complete this one. It is a patchwork however, so you can view my watchlist and hopefully find some inspiration there.
