Friday '56: Around the World in 80 Days

Want to watch the movie that basically invented cameo performances? You're looking at it!

Around the World in 80 Days

"A Victorian Englishman bets that with the new steamships and railways he can circumnavigate the globe in eighty days."

Starring: David Niven, Catinflas

Thoughts: This is spectacle at its best, most inflated, most extreme version of itself. I'm in no rush to re-watch this anytime soon, but the backstage story behind how its producer, Mike Todd, basically turned this movie into the little engine that could win Best Picture in 1956 is astounding, as is his story in general.

Mike Todd was married to Elizabeth Taylor and by all accounts they were happily married and totally in love. He was killed in a plane crash in early 1958. His best friend, Eddie Fisher, rushed to console his young widow, and then... well, you don't need me to rehash the whole Liz/Eddie/Debbie and Liz/Eddie/Richard Burton stories.
