My Favourite Doris Day Movies...as told by Letterboxd Reviews

Happy 100th Birthday Doris Day!

Honestly, I'm so glad I discovered her movies when I did; they're such a joy to turn on and repeat over and over again (I say this as I'm on my second viewing of Pillow Talk in an evening...). She's charming, effervescent, light and fun.

So in honour of her birthday, and as a companion piece to my blog post for the Sixth Annual Doris Day Blogathon, I'm looking at all of my favourite Doris Day movies and giving you the reasons why they're my favourites...through Letterboxd reviews.

Onward!

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

"I'm in pastel heaven!" — Anna Imhoff

"A silly story told in a delightful way. Doris Day lights up the screen." — 80sKid83

"I must be on the high seas, because I’ve been romanced by this film." — Mike Hawkins

It Happened to Jane (1959)

"Jack Lemmon running around in his underwear frantically carrying a lobster can actually be so personal." — Kate

"Look, if I have to watch Doris Day cheat on Rock Hudson with anyone, I’m glad it’s Jack Lemmon." — Glenn

"Very corny, but saved by the fact it has two of the most likeable stars ever in Doris Day and Jack Lemmon. Funny in parts, but very much outshined by the other movies both of them did during this era." — Matthew

Pillow Talk (1959)

"Fast-paced, funny and full of heart, this colourful film whizzes by in the blink of an eye. Loved it!" —
Louise Okafor

"This could never be made today (no one has a party line anymore)." — jennelse

"The saga of my grandma forcing me to watch rock hudson’s entire filmography continues btw" — maria

"Now my grandma can stop asking if I've seen it." — Hailey

"You wouldn't see me complaining if i could pick up my phone at any time and hear rock hudson singing." — Morgan

Lover Come Back (1961)

"What if VIP is the friends we made along the way?" — {Todd}

"This world is such a scary, uncertain place right now, but one certainty is that Rock Hudson and Doris Day in vibrant technicolor will never fail to make me smile and laugh." — Bre

"The biggest flaw in this is that everyone seems to think that Rock Hudson isn’t attractive with a full beard." — Eric Eidelstein [Jess note: CO-SIGNED]

"Needs more Tony Randall declaring himself the King of the Elevator and threatening to push mid-level executives out of windows." — Kyle Schurmann

That Touch of Mink (1962)

"One day I’ll make a list of all the old movies that feature a fashion show for absolutely no reason." — Sara Clements

"Spending half a day with Cary Grant and feeling like you're in love with him is big mood." — connerys

"Doris Day’s 60s 'bedroom' romcoms are always so wacky! There are so many ridiculous moments here, but I had a lot of fun." — Hana

The Thrill of It All (1963)

"The first glimpse I ever got of Doris in my life was when I greeted my grandmother in her bedroom one day while she was sick in bed, and watching this. She leaned over and kissed me on the cheek then said 'This is Doris Day. Do you like Doris Day?' I stayed and watched for a few minutes then left and did something else. About fourteen years later in 2016, after I had gotten much more into classic films, I watched it and proceeded to talk about it with my dad about how much I loved it. He reminded me that this was my grandmother's favorite film, she had since passed away. So not only is this movie completely outstanding in every way, it has become a sentimental treasure to me." — Emily

"They used to make shampoo out of pine tar?" — russman

"I used to watch this movie constantly, I was fascinated by the world of marketing, apparently. That or I got a huge kick out of soap suds overtaking a swimming pool (and Doris’s character shares my mom’s name)! The message is crap, but Doris is so charming and she and James Garner are a nice pair." — Katrina B

Send Me No Flowers (1964)

"We never deserved Rock Hudson." — Alex Franquiera

"Doris Day slapping Rock Hudson awake is so satisfying." — Jackie

"Doris Day's hair is big and full of secrets." — asta

"All the bad things I have said about this film, I take it all back. I'm so glad I decided to give it another chance and rewatch it because this time I found it to be so lovely and fun. Tony Randall was hilarious! this definitely wouldn't have been the same without him. Ooh and I love the soundtrack." — Angelica

The Glass Bottom Boat (1966)

source unknown

"A TECHNICOLOUR HIGH CAMP NASA SPY LOVE GOOFBALL ROMP WHERE EVERYONE IS SLICK IN SUITS AND DORIS DAY WEARS THE MOST IMAGINABLY WONDERFUL OUTFITS? Aaand DOM DELUISE? YEAH I GIGGLED A LOT AT THIS." — ~findlay

"Doris Day plays a mermaid who is mistaken for a Russian spy, or something to that effect in this zany mid-60's romantic comedy. Rod Taylor works at NASA and is the romantic interest. Wacky hijinks ensue." — lebowskidoo

"Can't I just sit in the red room with Doris Day and Rod Taylor and eat banana cream cake, while singing the theme song for this movie?! HUH IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!?!" — Ariana

"They say dating is tough now, but back in the '60s you couldn't go on two dates with a girl without wondering if she might be a Russian spy." — kmarus
