Announcing: Rewatching the Best Actresses!
OH, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS!
About a decade ago, I got a copy of 501 Must-See Movies for Christmas and stayed up late initialing the pages of the movies I'd already seen and avidly reading the reasons behind why some of the ones I hadn't seen had made the cut. And then that spurred me to watch more movies, and to go onto the internet and look up the 'best movies', which led me to the AFI 100 Year...100 Movies series, and inevitably to the Oscars.
One of the first categories I completed was the Best Actress Oscar winners. It took several years to watch them all, but I did it. I've also started watching all of the nominees for the major categories, so I see a lot of the newer Best Actress nominees as well (I'm slowly working my way back historically).
BUT it's been a while since I've seen a lot of these movies and I want to see if my tastes have changed.
And that leads me to my big 2025 project:
REWATCHING THE BEST ACTRESS WINNERS!
This year I want to (try and) rewatch all of the movies that have won Best Actress. All 97 movies—well, 98 by the end of the year—starting from Janet Gaynor's triple-crown in 1927 through to whoever takes Emma Stone's place as the current Best Actress winner.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE RULES I'M LAYING OUT:
- We're watching these movies chronologically. I can remember how I felt about some of these movies the first time around—and I definitely have a lot of favourite actresses who appear on this list (like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland, and more)—but if I watch these out of order based on vibes, I'll preemptively rank them. Plus, it'll be fun to see how tastes change as we move through time and we can't do that if we watch out of order.
- If I don't get all the way to 2024's Best Actress winner, that's okay. I'm not going to try to cram them all in this year, but I would like to be at least 75% done by the end of the year (which Google tells me will be 1999's winner).
- Each Best Actress winner will get her own post. To discuss the movie and how I felt about it, and maybe we'll keep a running tally of rankings before a year-end post.
