The Last Film of...Lillian Gish
The Whales of August (1987)
Two aging sisters, played by Lillian Gish and Bette Davis (in one of her final roles as well), living on the Maine coast, are spending possibly the last summer of their lives together in the cottage that's been in the family for decades. They've never been close and now that all they have left is time to talk, they find it hard to bridge the gap that's always been between them.
Why Was This Lillian Gish's Last Film?
She was 93 years old when she made it, and after a long, storied career that spanned silent film, sound films, theatre and radio, Lillian was ready for a rest.
Is This a Good Movie?
Yes, but it's not for everyone. All of the actors are elderly and it's a very literary, very prosaic film with very little in the way of meaty action: it's all character driven. That said, it's worth a watch if only to see two titans like Lillian Gish and Bette Davis one last time.
