Best Actress: Sally Field II
"You like me!"
Even if you're not a fan of Sally Field's second Oscar win, you have to admit that she gave an all-timer acceptance speech.
Honestly? That's probably all I have to say about Places in the Heart. It's fine; definitely not bottom of the list for performances that won, but it's kind of a baffling choice. Maybe it was a weak year for film? I don't know. Like, it's a perfectly fine movie about a widow who has to run the farm herself with all the odds stacked against her. It's just not memorable in any way except for Sally. How could you possibly root against this woman?
Sally was nominated against Judy Davis (A Passage to India), Jessica Lange (Country), Vanessa Redgrave (The Bostonians), and Sissy Spacek (The River). I've only seen A Passage to India out of these other nominees, and it wasn't my favourite. I don't think I've ever heard of the other films.
DID I LIKE PLACES IN THE HEART? Meh.
