Meryl Streep's Oscar Dress
Back before it became de rigeur to dress sustainably or wear
archival fashion, Meryl Streep signed onto an eco-friendly red carpet challenge
ahead of the 2012 Oscars, where she (surprise!) won Best Actress for The
Iron Lady.
Livia Firth
launched the Green Carpet Challenge to encourage stars and fashion
houses to participate in a more eco-friendly fashion cycle. When Meryl arrived
on the red carpet, she was wearing a golden draped gown with fabric that had
been approved as ‘green’.
The custom-designed Lanvin gown was gold lamé and cinched at
the waist with a woven gold belt. Meryl’s then-stylist, Zoe Buck, told
The Hollywood Reporter that her Oscars gown was “a departure, but
totally regal.”
Fashion bloggers, style experts, and Oscarologists Tom and Lorenzo often say that if you want the Oscar, you have to be the Oscar. Seriously, look up how many times a nominee shows up in a golden variant, it's uncanny!
But when you look this good, why wouldn't you want to match your trophy?
