Grace Kelly's Oscar Dress
This is the only Oscar dress ever worn by a princess, and it's just so stunningly elegant that of course it's one of my favourites.
When she picked up her surprise Oscar for The Country Girl, Grace did it in chic style, sporting a satin mint green Edith Head gown. I love the way the fabric bunches at the back, in a pseudo-train, and the cut around the bodice that looks like the fabric is folded down over itself. You can read my very first post on Box Office Poisons about Grace's surprise Oscar win (and why I controversially love that she won for The Country Girl) here.
A year after her Oscar win, Grace was prepping for a new royal life in Monaco. Typically, the previous year's Best Actress and Best Actor present at the next ceremony. When Grace presented the Oscar to Ernest Borgnine for Marty, it was her last major Hollywood event. She married Prince Rainier III of Monaco on April 18, 1956.
A few years ago, my mother and I were in Montreal to see an exhibit on Princess Grace's wardrobe, and this Oscar dress and her Oscar were on display. It's even more beautiful in person.
