Inside Doris Day's Pillow Talk Apartment

I can think of a million reasons why I love Pillow Talk so much, but in today's post, I want to focus on Doris Day's chic mid-century apartment.

Doris plays Jan Morrow, an interior decorator who's constantly at war with the man on the other end of her party line: Rock Hudson. Pillow Talk is a movie I'd recommend until the end of time, but let's look at Jan's apartment.

Our first glimpse of Jan's apartment is her bedroom. It's remarkably...beige and boring compared to the rest of her apartment, but it's all tastefully put together. I love the fabric-covered headboard, and the nightstands with pineapple-style motifs.

On the far nightstand, you can see a blue radio; on the closer nightstand, one of her many telephones and a stack of books.

Here's a different view of the bedroom with its antique wall clock, chaise, and silk curtains.

As Jan alights out of her bedroom to get ready for Alma, the housekeeper, to arrive, we get a quick look at the living area and the kitchen (and yet another telephone). You can see a serving tray just in front of Jan.

I snapped this just for the ice blue storage section in her refrigerator.

You can just make out the oven here, and the pale blue cupboards. There's a long cupboard that runs along the top of the kitchen, and Jan has decorative plates and porcelain bird figurines up there.

Here's a better look at Jan's living room, totally pink with complementing accent pieces. I love the shelving unit that divides the living room from the bedroom area.

Jan lives in swanky style, in case it wasn't obvious: her building has its own elevator operator, and she has a housekeeper (so perfectly played by Thelma Ritter).

Later in the film, Jan is contemplating a letter she received from the telephone company at her home office. She has a spectacular view and a balcony. There's another peekaboo view of her bedroom, wtih a better look at the armchair and her bedside area.

I love the burnished look of her white armoire in the living room corner, and how it fits with the nearly all-white colour scheme in the entryway. Those tall chairs as well, with the red checkered pattern add great colour, but I'm in love with the pink living room area and the accent throw pillows.

Delicate salmon pink features in the kitchen, including a tray of lemons.

We're about to get a better view inside Jan's kitchen. I love that coffee carafe.

Jan standing in front of the sink. Her kitchen is muted blues/lavenders with hints of salmon pink. I love the contrast of pink countertops and blue/lavender doors and walls.

A closer look at some of the knick-knacks on Jan's shelving unit. They're all paired decorative pieces.

Jan's boudoir. Again, most of the features in her bedroom are beige, so it stands to reason that the flowers, the perfume, and the mirror frame would match. The blue/lavender door is the only standout.

Ah, the passage of time! Jan's swapped out the lemons for oranges on the kitchen counter.

Soft sheets.

I enjoy the contrast of styles here: Jan's all soft and romantic; Brad's all strong and sharp. They both have artwork over their beds and tall, similar lamps.

Yet...another...telephone. This is another muted room in Jan's apartment: it's blue marble with brown towels and shower curtains, all monogrammed, of course.

Contrast with Brad's bathroom. Call me crazy, but I like the design of his more? I love those subway tiles. Jan's bathroom looks like you're bathing in a palace; Brad's looks like you're in a regular apartment.

I love the light fixtures hanging over Jan's home office space. That must be an inspiring view.

Those are fun curtains.

What can I say, I'm in love with this kitchen!

Another view of the bedroom as Jan packs for her getaway with Rex Stetson.

Further proof that Jan lives in a fancy apartment building? There's a concierge.

And here is, perhaps, the greatest accessory of all: Rock Hudson. He really brightens up the space.

A different view of the living room area and the home office with those tall windows.

And that's Doris Day's apartment in Pillow Talk. Kinda makes you want to pack up and move to New York, eh?
