These Are a Few of My Favourite Posts (of 2020)!
Here were some of my favourite Box Office Poisons posts of 2020!
And the Oscar Goes to [Princess] Grace Kelly!
It’s hard to hold you to a contract when you’re always threatening to retire if you don’t get your way. And when you have the money that Grace did, not only from her modelling days, but from her Kelly trust fund, you have something in addition to that temerity to back you up.
Enter: The Country Girl.
"George, Your Hypochondria's Showing" - Send Me No Flowers
Released in October 1964, [Send Me No Flowers] is the final pairing of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. They made three films together: Pillow Talk (1959), Lover Come Back (1961), and this. Notably, Send Me No Flowers is the only film they made that doesn't involve mistaken identity or Rock Hudson playing a big ole womanizer or dating of any kind.
My Friend Audrey
[Audrey's] been with me through the best moments and the saddest, when the only thing that brought me comfort was curling up in bed and watching one of her comedies. Now, whenever I put on one of her movies, it feels like saying hello to an old friend.
"I Have My Own Theory About the Fall of France" - The Major and the Minor
The Major and the Minor is a lighthearted comedy masterpiece. It's Ginger Rogers at her comedienne best. It's Billy Wilder's directorial debut. It's perfectly charming and light. And it would absolutely not get made today under any circumstances.
Goodbye Olivia
[Olivia] gives Melly Hamilton enough sensitivity and enough strength that she's a definite highlight of the film. She carries the emotional tone of the film, in my opinion, and when she passes at the end, it's such a significant loss that it irrevocably changes the lives of all the characters.
Enduring Ingrid: Ingrid Bergman and Casablanca
I've had the fortune of seeing Casablanca on the big screen twice, and tucked into a seat in an old movie theatre (Art Deco-style decor and all), it's even more romantic than watching at home.
Inside Paradise
I love mid-century modern architecture and decor (I have so many glasses and tumblrs and kitchenware accessories from that time period). My dream house would be a ranch-style mid-century modern home just like Lana Turner's in this film.
Six Decades of Bette Davis
In honour of one of Hollywood's greatest actresses (she's second only to Katharine Hepburn on the American Film Institute's 100 Years...100 Stars list), I'm picking one film per decade of her storied career to recommend for you to watch. Let's dive in! Or should I say: fasten your seat belts?
Bonjour Paris! Travelling Through Audrey Hepburn's Paris
Today I'm dreaming about travelling around Audrey Hepburn's version of Paris. Since we can't go anywhere, how about a virtual tour of her Parisian-set movies and the filming locations therein?
Scorpio Season: Grace Kelly
Grace was so obsessed with astrology that she always read her horoscope and she had her birth chart drafted to better understand her life and the role that the stars played in her life's trajectory. She reported trusted astrology so much that she entrusted it to figure out friendships and romance as well.
"Peter, What Does a Professor's Wife Have to Do? I Meant to Ask You Yesterday" - Vivacious Lady
What's this, another chance to celebrate the great Ginger Rogers? Okay, I'll accept the offer!
