My Favourite Joanne Woodward Movies

Happy 91st Birthday Joanne Woodward!

Joanne Woodward was a late discovery for me. Up until last year, I'd only seen her in The Three Faces of Eve and Philadelphia. But something about her acting style intrigued me (and there was something about the man she's married to) and I decided to watch more of her movies.

In honour of her 91st birthday, I'm picking five of my favourite Joanne Woodward movies. Let's dive in!

The Three Faces of Eve (1957)

I have a rule, and I'm not sure where it originated, but if The Three Faces of Eve is on TCM, I watch it. I've always appreciated Joanne's range and she gets to show off three characters in this film (which won her the Oscar). It may be outdated in terms of diagnosis and treatment, but it's worth a watch for Joanne's performance.

A New Kind of Love (1963)

This romantic comedy, about a mousy fashion designer (copier) and a womanizing journalist in Paris is just so much fun. I love watching Joanne and Paul acting together (they starred together often, in comedies and dramas), and they seemed to be having a gas together.

The Stripper (1963)

Joanne so totally disappears into the role of Lila Green, an actress-turned-stripper who wreaks havoc on a small town. I'd definitely recommend this film for anyone wanting to learn more about Joanne's range.

Rachel, Rachel (1968)

This is such an understated yet powerful performance: a 30-something single woman who still lives with her mother and teaches at her old elementary school wants to experience more from life after she realizes she's been too afraid to live it. Joanne earned her second Oscar nomination for this performance, directed by her husband, though she lost to Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand.

A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966)

Another movie that, on paper, isn't one that I'd ever be interested in watching, but this pseudo-Western, about a wife and mother who has to jump in to a poker game to replace her husband (played by Henry Fonda). It's fun, it's dramatic, and you'll love Joanne's performance.
