Inside the Boyer Family House (The Thrill of It All!)

It's been a few months since we've gone inside the set design of an old movie, and it's always such a thrill to look back...

So, à propos of nothing, just because I want to, let's take a look at the Boyer Family house in The Thrill of It All!

If you've never seen it, The Thrill of It All! is a fun comedy about a housewife, Beverly Boyer (played by Doris Day), who gets a job doing commercials for Lucky Soap, much to the chagrin of her husband, Dr. Gerald Boyer (played by James Garner). They live in a perfect house and have a perfect life.

And I'm in love with the colour scheme of teal and pink in the bathroom.

I'm pretty sure I have that phone, though it doesn't work!

Efficient kitchen.

Albeit, a little plainly decorated.

I love the painted brick.

The Boyers' bedroom is my favourite room in the house. It's huge! There's more painted brick there, and a fireplace!

They have their china on display. And that's Zazu Pitts in her final film role: she passed away before the film came out.

If I'm ever lucky enough to own a house, I'm borrowing heavily from Beverly's bedroom design. I love that salmon armchair and that mirror.

When Beverly finally appears on TV, the kids are allowed to watch her. The TV stand also features a set of encyclopedias, duck carvings and random porcelain pieces.

They also have a carport, which, to me, screams opulent (but is most likely just the norm for most houses in the '60s).

My favourite random bit that's included in this movie? The fact that Beverly makes her own ketchup in the basement.

You can see a sled leaning up against the stairs.

Why you'd ever need that much ketchup, I have no clue, but I love the set-up. She'd kill it at the farmers markets.

Oh, and their master bathroom is also gigantic.

I'm guessing, based on the toy box visible, that this is Andy's room. His sister Maggie is played by Kym Karath, who played Gretl in The Sound of Music

From this angle, we get to see the knick knacks on Beverly's shelves. Including a few porcelain bunnies, a few sets of books, and a Scottish figure on its own.

Because it's the '60s, nobody shares a bed.

Another shot of the bedroom.

Who has a spiral staircase in their house? Rich doctors, that's who!

A shot of the living room area, with another fireplace and a interesting porcelain figurine on the coffee table.

The kitchen leading into the housekeeper's quarters.

A cozy bedroom for the housekeeper.

A peek into the living room.

The kitchen area. There had been a message on that board but it's since been erased.

The laundry area.

Another view of the dining room.

Beverly has a photo shoot set up in the bedroom. Gives you an idea of the space.

The house is very homey.

A daylight shot of the carport.

And our first glimpse of the backyard.

Which has been taken over by an inground pool.

Which you'd think Gerald would've noticed before driving his car into it.

A good message overall, really.

The landscaping is nice out there, too.

A rare angle towards Gerald's side of the bedroom.

A clean pool is a Happy pool, but what happens when the Happy gets into the pool?

Uh oh...

I don't envy cleaning up that mess...

The soap bubbles getting inside! Also, there's a dentist appointment for someone on Thursday!

The front door.

A landscaping shot.

And now you know how to get a car out of your pool.

Another view of the bedroom and master bathroom.

All the colognes and sprays lined up under a Bob Ross painting.

Seriously though, that backyard.

Raising hell at the bar area downstairs.

The bedroom with a view into the master bathroom.

That's an interesting light above their heads.

And a different view coming up the stairs.

THE END!
