Summer Under the Stars: John Gilbert
Star of the Day: John Gilbert
Love (1927): "In this updated, silent adaptation of Anna Karenina, a married woman sacrifices everything for the love of a military officer."
As someone who's never seen an adaptation, let alone read the original novel of Anna Karenina, it was kind of refreshing to go into this updated version (set in the 1920s) without knowing the story. Also, have to confess I haven't seen a lot of John Gilbert movies, but his mythos is truly fascinating. It's no wonder he was one of the most popular silent actors!
Definitely check out Flesh and the Devil! That one is such a lush, passionate melodrama. Gilbert and Garbo's chemistry was never stronger.
