Summer Under the Stars: Hedy Lamarr

Star of the Day: Hedy Lamarr

Samson and Delilah (1949): "Epic re-telling of the story of the Biblical strongman laid low by love."

This Bible story always freaked me out as a kid. The ending, so gruesome! I saw bits of this as a kid, like, you know how you used to flip through the channels when your show went on commercial and sometimes you'd stop at a movie playing on another channel? This was playing one afternoon and my father kept flipping back and forth between whatever he was watching and this.

I did enjoy this; it felt overly long considering how relatively short the Bible story is, and I was shocked at how implicitly graphic it was with the blinding scene and the end, when Samson destroys the temple and everyone in it. The costumes, particularly Hedy's, were magnificent, too.

Hedy is so perfectly vicious as Delilah. "The name of Delilah will be an everlasting curse." Not that her actions are in any way justifiable, but she sure makes it interesting to watch it unfold.
