Summer Under the Stars: Henry Fonda

Star of the Day: Henry Fonda

The Big Street (1942): "A nightclub waiter, who's in love with a selfish showgirl, gets to prove his love when she's injured."

Boy, the 'Henry Fonda plays a soft spoken, heart sick fool in love with a brassy dame' genre really kept the lights on at the Fonda home in the '40s, didn't it?

All joking aside, I was expecting this to be Ball of Fire lite but was pleasantly surprised that it was more of a dramatic tale. I do have to confess that I'm not much of a Henry Fonda fan (I save my Fonda energy for Queen Jane). To me he's a perfectly fine actor but there's nothing really there for me to cling to; but maybe that was his superpower, the ability to play the everyman and reflect the regular joe back at them watching from the theatre seats.

This was fine up until the ending. That was even too much for me!
