Summer Under the Stars: Joan Crawford
Star of the Day: Joan Crawford
Rain (1932): "A missionary tries to reform a streetwalker trapped on a Pacific island."
Queen Joan. I have so many new-to-me movies to watch because of Joan Crawford Day, and a long weekend ahead of me. #blessed
Listen, I love a story of a hypocrite getting his comeuppance in the end. So much so that I've now seen every version of Rain (there's a Gloria Swanson flick and a Rita Hayworth flick, both with some version of the main character's name as the title, but I can't keep 'em straight. Just know that one's Miss Sadie Thompson and the other's Sadie Thompson) and I always enjoy how that d*ck preacher gets his in the end.
I do love Joan's comically overdone make-up at the beginning of the film, and I do love this story. But I know that this wasn't one of Joan's favourite performances (I think, in fact, she considered it her worst? Correct me if I'm wrong) nor one of her better-performing films. Still, it's nice to see her at the start of her talkie career!
