Summer Under the Stars: Frank Sinatra

Star of the Day: Frank Sinatra

Another case of 'I've seen everything they're airing today'. This must be a record for me!

Rather than do a long and winding post about all the movies that played yesterday, I'm just going to pick my favourite of the crop (and probably my favourite Frank Sinatra movie, full stop): High Society

I love High Society. Do films need remakes? No, but if you're gonna remake the classic The Philadelphia Story, at least they had a genius idea to turn it into a musical. And if you're going to attempt to build upon the chemistry between Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant and her with James Stewart, you really couldn't have gone wrong with Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra.

I've written on here a bunch of times about my enduring love for High Society (here, here, here, and here, for a Frank-focused post), so I'll save my wrists the carpal tunnel, but I really do think that, as his career went on and the mythic status firmed up underneath him, Frank really began to hit his stride in his later film career. By the time you get to his '60s fare, like Ocean's Eleven (that ending pan shot when they realize what became of the goods... perfection!) or Robin and the 7 Hoods or Marriage on the Rocks or The Manchurian Candidate you've got a man at the peak of his celebrity and status.

All that to say, give Frank Sinatra his flowers; the man had real talent as an actor and a filmography that cements the status.
