Summer Under the Stars: Lana Turner
Star of the Day: Lana Turner
Honky Tonk (1941): "A young girl falls for a western gambler."
I remember reading somewhere that this was considered a comedy, and a romance film, but then I read the brief synopsis, about how this is set back in frontier times and was so thoroughly puzzled as to what the tone of Honky Tonk would be that I committed to enjoying the ride come what may, and it did not disappoint!
Lana has a very captivating presence, and perhaps the off-screen drama adds to her overall mystique, but you can't deny that there's star quality there. She's perfect in this film; it doesn't hinge on her beauty or sex appeal, she's not supposed to be the true eye candy of the film, and it's all the better because she's allowed to be an actress here. The chemistry with Clark Gable is off the charts.
I'd definitely watch this one again!
