Inside the Lord Mansion (HIGH SOCIETY)

Who wouldn't want to live in a glamorous Newport mansion?

High Society premiered on this day 68 years ago, so let's head to the Lord Mansion and see the opulence Grace Kelly surrounded herself in on her last film set before becoming the Serene Princess of Monaco!

Starting off with a rotary phone sighting! And the deep emerald wingback chair is on my envy list.

That wallpaper! That writing desk! Those plants in the background!

Here's a closer look at the wallpaper. Damn this rental, I'd love to have this wallpaper.

As you can see, the Lords have a nearly entirely blue home accented with pops of greens and beiges. Very classical, and it suits Grace, who's playing Tracy Lord (a role popularized in the original The Philadelphia Story by Katharine Hepburn).

Enter Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm, aka Mike Connor and Liz Imbrie from Spy magazine. That carpet must have been a pain to vaccuum and not leave lines, but it's such a pretty colour.

They're shown one of the sitting rooms while they wait for Tracy to show up and give them an interview. This is the room Caroline Lord, the little sister, was in at the beginning of the movie, but we get a better glimpse here.

Alight, Tracy! Love those lush red curtains. That statue behind Liz, though...

An outdoor bar cart? Sign me up! Love the floral furniture.

A peek at the artwork, but if 30 Rock has taught me anything, art is only paintings of horses. So...the Lords have no taste in this regard, apparently.

Here's the room, silver and blues, where all of Tracy's wedding gifts are displayed. Love the curtains and the flower displays!

Of course the Lords have a pool...

...and the furniture is amazing.

Not a part of home décor, but let's bring back hoods and scarves to cover your hair when you drive.

The setting shifts to Uncle Willy's home, which he's selling. Have fun packing up all those books!

To say nothing about the bar behind Tracy. My dream house is going to have a killer home bar.

On the whole, Uncle Willy's home is so much more warm and inviting that the cold Lord mansion.

Our only glimpse at Tracy's bedroom, which is tastefully appointed.

The pre-wedding ball in the Lord mansion.

More enviable wallpaper.

And floral arrangements.

There's even a bandstand!

Again, not part of the decor, but I can't pass up an opportunity to say that I've seen this gown in person and it's just as gorgeous today (or in 2013) as it is on film.

Another glimpse of the pool area.

And the grounds. Imagine just having statues littering your grounds.

Tracy's a mood in this picture, and I need that couch and those throw pillows. No notes.

One last glimpse of the wallpaper!

And that's all, folks!

  1. I loved this post, Jess -- especially because I have tried (and failed) more than once to watch this film and I've given up. But that wallpaper! The patio furniture! Tracy's dresses! (Where did you see that one dress in person? Gorgeous!) And the sight of the outdoor bar cart renewed my desire to have a bar cart in my house. Really fun post. (And if you get a chance and are so inclined, I love for you to email me at the CMBA email box and tell me how to do screenshots!)
