Summer Under the Stars: Humphrey Bogart

Star of the Day: Humphrey Bogart

Across the Pacific (1942): "In December 1941, ex-army captain Rick Leland boards a Japanese ship heading to Asia via the Panama Canal where his Japanese hosts show interest in the American defense plans for the canal zone."

Hometown shoutout! This starts off in Halifax. Also how on the nose that a woman named Alberta would be from Medicine Hat.

Anyway, enough about Canada. This was billed as a melodrama in the articles I read but I'd classify it more as a thriller. It's certainly dark and sexy. Some of the scenes between Bogie and Mary Astor? The censors must have been reeling!

A fine tale, smart and sophisticated.
