Summer Under Stars: Burt Lancaster
Star of the Day: Burt Lancaster

Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) - True story of Robert Stroud, the prison lifer who became an expert on birds.

I've been meaning to watch Birdman of Alcatraz for years, and I wasn't disappointed. I haven't seen many of Burt Lancaster's films, but I appreciate the intensity he brings to each role.
Perhaps it's because I don't "know" him as well as other actors from the period, but I always find him believable when he disappears into a role: he can be Elmer Gantry, the Birdman of Alcatraz, a swimmer looking for a pool, or J.J. Hunsecker (my favourite performance, in Sweet Smell of Success).
