Summer Under the Stars: Charlie Chaplin

Star of the Day: Charlie Chaplin

The Pilgrim (1923) - In this silent film, an escaped convict poses as the new pastor of a small-town church.

There were many things to love about The Pilgrim, but I think my favourite gag was when the little boy covered the cake with a bowler hat and the Tramp decorated it and then tried to cut into it afterwards. I also loved at the end when he was running away from the gun-fighting by straddling the international border line of America and Mexico.

Charlie Chaplin's silent films are such a treasure. I think my favourite though, which I first saw in a film class in college, is The Gold Rush. So simple yet so funny!
