Let's talk about the interesting apartment owned by Betty Grable and Jack Lemmon... and then Betty Grable and Gower Champion... and then all of them, for a bit, today.
gif by me If you've never seen Three for the Show, don't worry. It's the same story as Too Many Husbands or My Favorite Wife or Move Over, Darling. Basically, Jack Lemmon's been MIA for a few years and in his absence, his wife, Betty Grable, marries his best friend/their co-worker, Gower Champion. Then he shows up again after being rescued from a deserted island and chaos ensues!
But that's not what I'm here to talk about today, though you should watch this for fun musical numbers, neurotic Jack Lemmon, and the ever-talented Marge Champion dancing. I want to talk about their glorious apartment!
Here's the exterior, right in the heart of bustling New York City. They have a doorman and everything.
The apartment is stark white with coral accents throughout.
And it's a very tactical set. It almost seems to move and it's easy to stage scenes within the apartment. Here's a glimpse of their living room/bar set-up.
The furniture is all low.
And the bar is built into the wall. Jack's reaching for the highballs and tumblers.
Then they show him where the ice bucket is kept and his mind is blown.
A better glimpse of the sofa with all sorts of pink flowers about.
I love the framing of this scene, when Jack's going to go upstairs to prepare for his wife, and the camera follows him on his way.
The second floor is also open, looking out onto the first floor, which adds a lot to the visual gags.
Like when Jack finds another man's clothes in the main bedroom and comes rushing to the edge of the second floor.
Here's a better glimpse of the entry way, since we entered the apartment behind everyone and didn't see it. The front door is interesting but all I could think about was 'How much dust do you think it collects?'
Could I have chosen a different screenshot where Jack's pajama pants aren't up to his armpits to show off the main bedroom? Yes, but then we wouldn't be able to laugh about it now would we?
The two husbands sleep in the same room to give Betty space to think (spoiler: she chooses Jack in the end, and Marge and Gower Champion wind up together).
It's a very sterile bedroom. I know I'd hate it. Well, except for that blue rotary phone behind Gower...
The bathroom is also boring.
But I do love the wall-mounted TV!

I took all the screencaps in this post.
