Inside the Preston Apartment...Midnight Lace

Who among us doesn't want to be terrorized whilst living in such a chic London apartment? Nobody? Okay, cool, me either. But I do want this apartment!

Today we're looking at the tasteful and chic apartment shared by Rex Harrison and Doris Day in Midnight Lace. Let's dive in!

A bit of background: Midnight Lace is the reason Doris Day never made a dramatic picture again for the rest of her career. She found it too trying and traumatizing, so she stuck with comedy. And I say, thank God. Because although she was phenomenal in every movie she made, her string of '60s comedies are my favourite.

Here's the premise: Kit Preston has moved to London with her British husband, Tony, and she begins receiving threatening telephone calls.

And on such a glam telephone, too.

But here's the thing: nobody really believes her. They think she's hysterical and/or making it up to keep her husband's attention, and eventually it comes to the point where they think she's going crazy and needs to be seen by a psychiatrist.

Overall, not a fan of all white décor but hello to that insane statue behind Kit.

Must appreciate any home with a bar area. I always thought it was so chic watching (don't laugh) soap operas as a teen and the characters would always ruminate (out loud, within earshot of the people they didn't want hearing) about their schemes. I think it says a lot about me that I want a bar cart in my apartment just so I can swan around and pretend that I'm Ivy Crane from Passions (if you know, you know).

Here's the hallway. I have to say that I'm glad elevator technology and design has advanced to the point that you rarely look like you're trapped in a metal cage anymore.

Another angle of the sitting room, with the bar area on full display. That's Kit's neighbour, by the way, Peggy, who's always trying to placate her when the calls come.

Art.

I love the curved staircase. So dramatic.

And that fireplace!

Also love those panels on the staircase.

I just love the way this apartment is designed. How cool that the second floor is open like that? And that hint of pink behind Kit!

Their bedroom is done up in pastels of pink and blue. I love those headboards.

And, of course, that pink telephone!

Not a fan of how it looks like a prison (a mental prison, perhaps!) when the light hits the curtains.

Tasteful furniture.

Framed in red, to intensify the terror she's feeling with these calls.

Here's another angle of the master bedroom.

And the sitting area. So chic!

I love everything about this décor and design.

Those panels framing the door, so interesting.

Screaming from the balcony.

I love how the only real pops of bright colour in this room (that we can see) are the purple flowers and the books.

Eventually, Kit's paranoia gets so bad that Tony calls her mother over. Say hello to Myrna Loy!

I love the framing of this shot.

And this. Truly highlights how open the space is and how tastefully each area is decorated.

I'm not going to spoil Midnight Lace for you, but suffice it to say that it's very well done and well-acted by all the principals. And you'll probably come out totally understanding why Doris never wanted to touch drama or mystery ever again. Go watch this movie!
